Podcast Review – Blogs on Tape
If you are a fantasy RPG GM, especially if you are into the OSR you must check out Blogs on Tape.
This podcast is created by Beloch Shrike and was inspired by the medium of audiobooks. At one time he posited that it would be really cool to have audio recordings of some of his favourite blogs. Well instead of sitting there dreaming he created Blogs on Tape.
This is a podcast in which the best of OSR blog posts are read out loud and put into podcast format.
Not only is the reading excellent but the choice of blog posts is fantastic. So far every single one of the articles has been excellent and every single article is one I “missed.” Posts that I never read, or more likely, even saw. So this was all 100% new content to me and what great content it was.
For example, episode 51 is an article about the lowly goblin and why encounters including them really suck. About how WotC and other major publishers have it wrong. How settings like The Forgotten Realms can take the wonder out of the game.
The episode before Witches & Killers was an amazing list of, well witches and assassins. This is more than just a list though, it’s got some of the most evocative descriptions I’ve heard and really highlights the creativity in the OSR Community.
Example:
“Witch Boy: Is an abandoned feral child who stumbled into prodigious arcane power when he sold his old age to a nightmare. Now he holds court over an array of diabolical entities which attend to him in his forest hideaway with terrified fawning respect. He wants for nothing, but parents. ”
